But you have to start off Easter morning with these yummy and adorable Easter egg-shaped pancakes first! They are easy to make and so fun to decorate!
If you are wondering how to make Easter egg-shaped pancakes, I’ll share a few tricks I use to get that “egg” shape!
How to make “perfect” pancakes shapes
1-Here is my secret to getting the pancakes in the exact shape you want them:
Yep. I use kitchen scissors to cut the pancakes (after cooking them of course) into the shapes I want them to be!
Keep a pair of kitchen shears handy and only use them for food. They are also great for cutting pizza!
“Perfect” is a relative term but it is much easier to cut a pancake into the shape you want instead of trying to pour it into the pan that way!
2- Pour the batter into a squeeze bottle
This is a good option if you coloring the batter with food coloring and trying to keep the color separate.
I find that I lose a lot of batter this way, but if you want a more exact shape when pouring, this might be a good option!
Pour the mixed batter into a squeeze bottle and shape the batter as you pour it into the pan.
3- Cookie cutters
After the pancake is cooked and cooled, you can use a cookie cutter to get a cute shape.
I find this works best for holiday pancakes if you want to make a Christmas tree or Halloween bat. Metal cookie cutters make a cleaner cut!
Easter Egg Pancake Ingredients
(Note- I almost always double this recipe! I am making pancakes for 4 people and a single batch doesn’t seem to be enough.)
You need:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 T baking powder
1/2 cup sugar (or honey)
1 1/2 cups milk (*for a little extra flavor, use 1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup flavored coffee creamer! I use almond milk and 1/2 cup of vanilla almond milk creamer but any flavor/brand should work!)
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For decorating you need:
White icing (one 16oz can)
food coloring
sprinkles
(For a shortcut, you can use colored icing: pink, blue, green, yellow)
Healthy alternatives: As a side note, I do not use artificial food dyes or ingredients in my cooking so here are a few alternatives that I use: Natural food dyes, Sprinkles, Icing, Sugar
AND… I use a (clean) food-safe paint palette to arrange the icing and sprinkles for decorating! (as shown below!)
How to make egg-shaped Easter pancakes
Step 1– Preheat a griddle or pan to medium heat
Step 2– In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder, sugar, milk, egg, and vanilla. Mix with a spoon until lumps are mostly gone. (You can also use a mixer and beat on low speed for 2 minutes)
Step 3– Once the griddle/pan is hot, add the pancake batter. You can try to make a slight oval or egg shape (if possible) while pouring, If you can’t get the shape, don’t worry- just use one of the shaping tricks above!
note- to get the nice brown pancake color, do not add butter or oil to the pan/griddle. using a non-stick surface should prevent sticking and give you that nice brown color. If you normally use butter, it will not change the taste of the pancake but may affect the color when cooked.
Step 4– When the pancake starts to bubble, gently flip it over and cook on the other side.
Step 5– Once both sides are cooked to a golden brown, remove from the pan and place on a dish to cool.
Step 6– If needed, cut pancakes into “egg” shapes.
Step 7– Prepare icing and decorating essentials.
To color icing: (Use one tub of white icing and divide evenly into however many colors you would like to make. For example, if you want to make pink, yellow, and blue, divide the icing into three small bowls- one for each color. Next, add 3-4 drops of food coloring to each bowl and stir. The more food coloring you add, the brighter the colors will be! (Wilson food colors are the brightest I have seen)
Step 8– Decorate the pancakes to look like Easter eggs. Eat your creation!
Storing Easter Pancakes
Pancakes will freeze for about one week in a freezer bag (I separate each with parchment paper for easy portioning) as long as the icing has not been added. They can be reheated in the microwave on a dish for about 30-45 seconds (depending on size and thickness). Microwave cooking times vary. You may need to reheat in 10-second intervals until desired warmth is achieved. Careful- they will be hot!
