How to get motivated to clean and do housework even if you feel overwhelmed
1.) Tune Out! Grab your Airpods or headphones or tell Alexa to “play cleaning music”! You can also catch up on reading with Audiobooks (I LIVE on Audible!!!) or even binge that Netflix series you’ve been wanting to watch! Putting on your favorite music or getting lost in an audiobook will help distract you from the fact that you’re cleaning and even make it… fun! Yes, you can have fun cleaning! If the kids see you dancing around with the broom, they might even join in (it’s worth a try!). I often get way more done than I even planned to because I’m engrossed in my book or music and don’t want to stop. TBH, the noise-canceling feature on my Airpods is a little bit of an escape!
2.) Pick 3- When you know you have to clean but it seems overwhelming to get started, just pick 3 things to do that would make you feel like your house is clean! Choose those things that stress you the most while looking around your house. For example, when there are dishes on the counter, I feel like the house is a disaster even though it’s really just ONE task. So if I do the dishes and get them out of sight, I feel like it’s not such a mess. Sweep the floor, dust, or do whatever helps you feel less overwhelmed. Once you have done those few things, you might feel motivated to keep going OR you might realize that your house wasn’t as messy as you felt it was!
3.) Have a Plan- Having a plan of what needs to be cleaned/decluttered can really cut the overwhelm out of cleaning. Thinking about all of the things that need to be done (and mentally planning when you can possibly get to them) is as unproductive as it is stressful. Instead of trying to do everything at once, have a plan! This way you know what needs to be done and when you will get to it. Try using the Daily Maintenance Schedule or if you really want a customized plan to fit your life and give you freedom from always cleaning, then The Happy Mom System is just what you need.
