Fun St. Patrick’s Day myths busted!
Did you know St. Patrick was actually born in England? Yes, it’s true. In fact, there are several myths about St. Patrick that are just legends and not based on actual, verifiable facts.
For example, it has been said that St. Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland but, in fact, no snakes actually live there. The ocean keeps away many of the animals that you typically find in North America or Europe.
St. Patrick was originally associated with the color blue. It wasn’t until a celebration in the 18th century when the shamrock became a national symbol that green was associated with the saint. (facts from National Geographics Kids)
Maybe I am a dork, but I love hearing about the history of traditions and holidays. St. Patrick’s Day is fun to celebrate and learn about whether you have Irish heritage or just a love of the culture.
I like to surprise the kids on holiday mornings by having the breakfast table covered in a colored plastic tablecloth, matching plates/cups from the dollar store, and sometimes even a holiday treat like this St. Patrick’s Day snack:
After a fun breakfast, it’s time to print out this adorable St. Patrick’s Day fingerprint poem and add their little handprints in the shape of a shamrock!
Tips for getting a good handprint:
- Use a paintbrush to apply paint on their hands instead of dipping hands in the paint (it’s less messy). These washable print pads work great!
- Keep baby wipes or paper towels nearby!
- Printing on card stock makes for a more sturdy keepsake
- Print out several copies of the poem. It took us a couple of tries to get a usable print with the right shape on the page.
- Try the “straight down, straight up” handprint technique to avoid smudging

The printable poem is black and white so your kids can color or paint!
If you want to get a shamrock shape, try adding one handprint, then turning the page to add another print (turning the paper is easier than turning your hand).
If you cannot get your whole hand on the page 4 times, use the side of your palm or just a few fingers to make each section.
Make the stem using one finger!
You can also just add one single handprint instead (a.k.a. the easy way!)
