St. Patrick was Captured by Pirates! It’s true!
Even if you are not Irish, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is such a fun and historic holiday! Did you know that St. Patrick was captured by PIRATES?!!! Here’s a little fun story:
You can tell the kids that according to Kids Britanica, “The holiday honors Saint Patrick, the man who brought Christianity to Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland. Yet people in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries enjoy the holiday, too.”
“Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the late 300s or early 400s. Pirates captured him when he was 16. They sold him as a slave in Ireland, where he worked as a shepherd for six years. He then escaped and returned home.
After years of religious training, Patrick went back to Ireland. There he converted many people to Christianity. The year of his death is unknown.
There are several legends about Saint Patrick. One legend says that he drove away all the snakes in Ireland. Another legend says that he used the three parts of a shamrock leaf to explain the idea of the Trinity. The Trinity refers to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the Christian religion.” (from Kids Britanica)
While they wear green to school and maybe even eat corned beef and cabbage for dinner, here is a quick and fun snack or breakfast to help your kids celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a little bit healthier way than eating chocolate coins 😉

How to Make a St. Patrick’s Day Snack Rainbow
Ingredients:
1 Apple
1 Banana
1 Orange (sliced into a circle shape for sun)
Yogurt bites (or white chocolate chips)
1/2 cup Yogurt
Sugar sprinkles in rainbow colors (you can also use food coloring to dye sugar if you don’t have rainbow sprinkles)
How to make the rainbow snack scene:
- Cut 1 large banana in half longways and place on the plate in a rainbow shape
- Add sugar sprinkles in rainbow colors. (If you are having trouble getting the sugar to stick, lightly coat the banana in yogurt first!). I used a spoon to sprinkle each color and wiped the plate clean after adding sprinkles.
- Peel and slice an apple and cut in half. Place 1 at each end of the rainbow
- Mix 1/2 yogurt with blue food coloring (optional) and coat each apple to make “clouds”. Add sugar sprinkles if desired. You could also add gold sprinkles or chocolate coins to one side as a “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow”!
- Place teddy graham on the rainbow
- Add a slice of orange for the sun. Place yogurt bites (or white chocolate chips) around the sun (optional)
- Serve and enjoy!
